ALAC is 16-bit and FLAC is 24-bit encoding, and FLAC has a higher sampling rate. When the record comes out, it's usually 100-200 MB, which is, by all means, impossible to store on a portable device. Yes and no. ALAC compares to CD quality, which is much better than most of your digital files. I went with ALAC simply because I have a bunch of iDevices and I wanted to manage my lossless files in iTunes.

That's why compression reduced those original files to make them smaller … There are some technical merits that FLAC has over ALAC.

Interpreting the above, bytes 5 and 6, which were originally 00 63, were changed to fe 62; byte 57 was changed from 12 to 10; and the two null bytes at 76 and 77 were dropped.. MQA files are artificially degraded FLAC files with far less resolution, only 13 bits vs. 16 bits as is common for music.
