It was considered to be a post office town by the state. The town of Tappan only had 4 families in 1840 but grew to it's peak of 171 people in 1860. The town site was permanently submerged when Tappan Lake was created. Today Tappan is a very popular place to get away for a weekend or a short vacation. You can see many people during the summer doing these activities. Tappan is now the water source for the nearby county seat of Cadiz. History A post office was established at Laceyville in 1850, and remained in operation until being discontinued in 1907. When the lake was flooded there were two villages that were inundated, Tappan, and Lacyville. The community was named for Major John S. Lacey. Tappan wasn’t expendable to the residents who lived there. The surrounding property, nearly 5000 acres was reclaimed to prevent erosion and runoff.

There is also a hiking trail that goes through tappans wetlands and is also a nature watch.

Remnants of the town still remain on the bottom of the lake. There are over 500 campsites to stay at. Dates to be announced at a later time.

In 1875 Tappan had a steam powered grist and saw mill, hotel, a school, blacksmith, shoe shop, tannery, a doctor, two general stores, and two churches. Tappan Lake Park lies within this area.

One theory is that early Dutch mariners on the Hudson River called this out-lying wilderness uyt-tappan, meaning out tappan and corrupted it in their own language to oud Tappan, thence in English ould or old tappan. Today, Lake Tappan is a nice place to visit for a day trip or while on vacation, but it’s sad that the town was considered to be expendable. One of Tappan’s churches was saved from destruction and was moved to the south side of the lake in 1941. The truth of this theory is debatable, but it is a fact that it was known as ould tappan since the first settlement after 1687.
