I did play it safe and start with a tiny pilot hole, then actually drilled the hole bigger in 2 more steps ( so 3 drillbits total) just to help avoid any paint cracking. On my Toyota Tercel I once break a nylon licence plate, but I was able to access it by the rear. I haven't received registration sticker; 2. screw hole is stripped in the license plate holder. One of the holes on my new '16 Charger was already stripped, and … I got a 2 year old car from them, it is still within 90 days when the temp registration is still valid.
... My rear license plate screw is stripped. Worst case you can easily remove the whole license plate panel to get access to the back side. Rear license plate screw stripped? Getting a butane or propane gas torch should be safe for this method. If the screw heads are covered with rust, it makes them impossible to remove with a screwdriver. Work the plate back and forth until the mounting holes stretch and bend around the rusted bolts.
I took my interior apart, and of course there are a million little screw holes for the interior panels, and half of them are stripped out and need to be repaired. Reinstalled the license plate.
So while doing the simple task of putting the new plates on tonight the top left rear license plate screw plastic anchor decided to strip itself.

Its plenty thick to hold the hand tightened screw in securely. This happened to me, the delivery people attached my license plate frame with the wrong size screws. Since the plate was warped, and there are only the two top bolts, I used Velcro tape across the bottom to hold the plate flat on the car.
A small bit on my Dremel tool was perfect to make the melted holes square.
I patched them with several layers of duct tape over the holes, but that was not a very satisfactory repair. Is the screw head actually stripped or is it just spinning without coming out? Drilling was very easy, and I didn't have to put anything behind it to support it.
